Boston's Mother's Day
Walk for Peace
Part of the Staying Human series · Tikkun Olam Track · 🤝 Acting
Each year on Mother's Day, thousands of Bostonians gather in Dorchester to walk — and to remember. The Mother's Day Walk for Peace is an annual 5K fundraiser supporting mothers and families of homicide victims through the programs of the Louis D. Brown Peace Institute. Now in its 30th year, the Walk has welcomed over 500,000 families since it was founded in 1996 by Chaplain Clementina Chéry, who organized it after losing her own son, Louis, to gun violence.
This is a truly Boston-based cause — one that supports victims and survivors of domestic and street violence, counsels those who have committed violent acts, and works with the incarcerated. A wholistic approach to preventing cycles of retaliatory violence.
Temple Hillel B'nai Torah has been proud to walk alongside our neighbors as part of the Interfaith contingent — in cold rain and in 80-degree weather — putting our values on our feet and standing in community with those who grieve and those who refuse to stop hoping.
Our tradition calls us to pursue peace — shalom — not only in our sanctuary, but in the streets of our city. Walking alongside survivors and their families is an act of witness and solidarity rooted in our Reconstructionist values: justice, community, and the affirmation of every human life.
Whether you walk or can't make it, please consider donating to the HBT team. Visit the Walk for Peace site, hit the Donate tab, and scroll down to find the Temple Hillel B'nai Torah team designation. Every contribution counts toward our $720 goal.
