Our Building & Grounds

Building Together

Tend & Keep

וַיִּקַּח יְהֹוָה אֱלֹהִים אֶת־הָאָדָם וַיַּנִּחֵהוּ בְגַן־עֵדֶן לְעָבְדָהּ וּלְשָׁמְרָהּ

"The LORD God took the man and placed him in the garden of Eden, to till it and tend it."

Bereishit (Genesis) 2:15, JPS translation

The last two words, l'ovdah ul'shomrah, give us our subtitle, and they carry more than the English shows:

  • L'ovdah ("to till/work it") shares a root with avodah, which also means worship. Caring for the place is a kind of service.
  • L'shomrah ("to tend/guard it") shares a root with shomer, as in shamor et yom haShabbat, guarding Shabbat. It's about protecting, not just maintaining.

Our building is where we pray, learn, celebrate and grieve together. Caring for it, and for the land around it, is part of how we care for each other and for the world. Here's what we've done, what we're working on, and what comes next.
