Chevruta Corner A note on the tradition (tap to read more)
Our sages taught that three things soften the year ahead: teshuvah, tefilah, and tzedakah: repentance, prayer, and righteous giving. We say these words in the High Holy Day liturgy. Teshuvah happens within us. Tefilah moves toward God. Tzedakah moves toward each other. Each year, the President's Bima Appeal has been how our community, and many others, makes that third step visible, a pin placed in a card, a pledge made in a full sanctuary.
The Bima Appeal is the moment our prayers take tangible form. No one gives for the paper, the electricity, or the landscaping. We give for what those things make possible: a child of 13, or an adult of 73, chanting Torah for the first time. A mourner rising to say Kaddish and finding the room full. Voices lifting together on a Friday night. A #FourthFriday table crowded with laughter, or a #SecondSaturday morning of learning. A quiet hour of chevruta study before services begin. A rabbi's visit during a hard week.
No one donates to buy chairs. They donate so that, on the day they need to say Kaddish, someone is sitting in those chairs.
Our Rosh Hashanah liturgy moves, in the Musaf Amidah, from Zichronot, remembrances of what has been, to Shofarot, the shofar's call toward what is still to come. The Bima Appeal sits at that same turn. Each generation doesn't simply inherit a synagogue. We help shape it, and then we pass it on. Every gift is part of that shaping.

$118 — supports the printing and materials for our High Holy Day services, including siddurim and machzors.
$180 — helps provide kiddush on Shabbat.
$360 — provides a stipend to a Chaverim School Madrich(ah), a teen member who helps teach our young children.
$540 — provides educational materials and supplies for Chaverim School students and teachers.
$650 — contributes toward solar panels to power our building more sustainably.
$720 — ensures the upkeep of social justice banners hung inside and outside the temple.
$1,000 — supports technology for a Shabbat or Holy Day Zoom service to bring us all together.
$1,800 — beautifies the temple grounds through landscaping during the changing seasons.
$2,500 — creates new programming, via Zoom and in person, for adults, teens and children.
$3,600 — supports our dedicated, welcoming staff who work to strengthen our HBT community.
$5,000 — ensures our sanctuary and all parts of our Temple have infrastructure and capacity, in person and via technology, to keep the HBT community engaged and supported all year.
