High Holy Day Schedule

Rosh Hashanah

  • Friday, September 11, 7:00–8:30 PM — Erev Rosh Hashanah
  • Saturday, September 12, 8:30–9:30 AM — Intergenerational Family Service (grades 0–2, with grownups), with Jon Wishnie, Rachel Shapp, and Poppy the Puppet — stay for snack
  • Saturday, September 12, 9:30 AM–1:00 PM — Sanctuary Service, with Rabbi Aliza and Eliana Golding The HBT Band plays from 9:15 AM and again during the Torah service. Approximate order: 9:30–10:30 AM songful liturgy, around 10:30 AM Torah service led by teens, around 11:15–11:30 AM Rabbi Aliza's D'var Torah, around 12:00 PM more songful liturgy. Because Day 1 falls on Shabbat this year, there will be no shofar sounding. The shofar will be sounded on Day 2 instead.
  • Saturday, September 12, 10:30 AM–12:00 PM — Children's Service (grades 3–6), with Rena Coben and Asher Cohen This program is open to HBT members. Not a member yet? Everyone is welcome at The Rosh Hashanah Puzzle on September 13.
  • Saturday, September 12, 12:00 PM — Teen Group, with Jon Wishnie This program is open to HBT members. Not a member yet? Everyone is welcome at The Rosh Hashanah Puzzle on September 13.
  • Sunday, September 13, 9:30 AM — Sanctuary Service, with Rabbi Aliza and Eliana Golding A bit more traditional and songful than Day 1, with everyone invited up to bless the Torah, plus some participatory study. The shofar will be sounded today, since it only takes place on Day 2 this year.
  • Sunday, September 13, 10:30 AM–12:00 PM — "The Rosh Hashanah Puzzle," with Talking Hands Theatre — Ages 0–12 & Their Grown-Ups: Generations Together, followed by a snack. Non-members and Friends of HBT are welcome.
  • Sunday, September 13, 5:00–5:30 PM — Tashlich at Millennium Park (Gardner Street boat launch; birdseed, not bread; kids and pets welcome)

Yom Kippur

  • Sunday, September 20, 6:15–8:30 PM — Kol Nidre, with Rabbi Aliza, Eliana Golding, and Robert Kalish on cello The sanctuary doors close at 6:15 PM for the Kol Nidre recitation. If you arrive after 6:15 PM, ushers will let you in at an appropriate time — please sit at the back and move forward once the Torahs are back in the ark. It is our custom to wear white.
  • Monday, September 21, 8:30–9:30 AM — Intergenerational Family Service, with Jon Wishnie, Rachel Shapp, and Poppy the Puppet

  • Monday, September 21, 2:00–4:45 PM — Body • Spirit • Mind: yoga, meditation, and reflection 2:00–2:40 PM Chair Yoga with Laurie Rotman; 2:45–3:25 PM Yom Kippur Liturgy discussion with Elana Elstein; 3:30–4:05 PM (to be determined); 4:10–4:50 PM Chanting and Pausing with Tracy Rich.
  • Monday, September 21, 5:00 PM — Yizkor
  • Monday, September 21, 5:30 PM — Mincha
  • Monday, September 21, 6:30 PM — Ne'ilah
  • Monday, September 21, 7:25 PM — Final Shofar Blast, followed immediately by Break-the-Fast Break-the-Fast is a cold dairy meal in the Knopf Social Hall. Please RSVP by Thursday, September 10 — see the registration form for cost.

Children, Family & Childcare

  • Children & Family Programming This includes family programming, children's services, and teen discussion for both days.
  • High Holy Day Childcare — Register by September 8 Childcare is available for ages 3 and up with advance registration by September 8. Hours: Erev Rosh Hashanah (Friday, September 11) 7:00–8:30 PM; Rosh Hashanah Day 1 (Saturday, September 12) 9:30 AM–1:00 PM; Rosh Hashanah Day 2 (Sunday, September 13) 9:30 AM–1:00 PM; Kol Nidre (Sunday, September 20) 6:15–8:30 PM; Yom Kippur (Monday, September 21) 9:30 AM–1:30 PM. Specify the dates you need childcare in the registration form.
