Temple Hillel B'nai Torah Seeks Religious School Teachers
A down-to-earth, social-justice-oriented, diverse Reconstructionist congregation in Boston (West Roxbury), led by Rabbi Aliza Schwartz, seeks a few teachers to join our religious school, Chaverim (Friends), for the 2026–2027 school year.

Chaverim teachers work with an actively involved rabbi, an experienced Education Director, teen madrichim, and colleagues who have built long-term relationships with the school. Our returning teachers are part of what makes Chaverim a stable, collaborative, and caring community.
- Teen madrichim: 10 madrichimot (grades 8–12) support classrooms and bring their own energy and leadership — teachers are part of a broader educational team, not working alone.
- An involved rabbi: Rabbi Aliza collaborates directly on curriculum and prayer — she and our Education Director recently co-created a new Creative Tefillah program together. Jewish education here isn't delegated and forgotten; it's central to the synagogue.
- Experienced leadership: our Education Director, Hillary Pinsker Engler, holds an EdD in Jewish Education and works closely with teachers on curriculum and classroom questions throughout the year.
- Staying power: several of our current teachers are in their 7th, 9th, and 10th years at Chaverim — a strong sign of a well-supported, healthy place to teach.
Our Curriculum
Our curriculum is tied to the four pillars of our synagogue: Torah (Learning), Chavurah (Community), Avodah (Worship & Spirituality), and Tikkun Olam (Repairing the World). From within the context of a safe, caring community, we strive to help students develop familiarity with, experience of, and connections to:
Jewish Texts
Torah and beyond, including the ongoing rabbinic tradition of interpretation, debate, and holding complexity.
Jewish Time
Shabbat and holidays throughout the year, as well as regular, structured community prayer.
Jewish Tasks
Values-based obligations we have to ourselves, to each other, and to the world beyond the Jewish community.

Open teaching schedules
- Sunday-only positionSundays, 9:45 a.m.–12:15 p.m.
1st or 2nd grade - Sunday and Wednesday positionSundays, 9:45 a.m.–12:15 p.m.
Wednesdays, 4:30–6 p.m.
3rd, 4th, or 6th grade - School year–
- Compensation$40–$65 per hour, based on experience and education
What we ask of teachers
Teachers attend regular meetings every one to two months, plan weekly lessons and communicate with parents, and complete progress reports once each semester.
Who should apply
Prior teaching or camp counselor experience is preferred. College students are welcome to apply. We are particularly interested in hiring Jews of Color as teachers.
